Mac dictation not working? Here is how to fix it

Most dictation problems on a Mac come down to a handful of settings. Work through these in order. Each one takes under a minute.

1. Check that Dictation is switched on

Open System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar, and look at Dictation. If it is off, turn it on and click Enable.

2. Turn off Voice Control

When Voice Control is on, standard macOS Dictation is not available, and dictation goes through Voice Control instead. Turn Voice Control off in System Settings, Accessibility, then try the Dictation shortcut again.

3. Check the shortcut

In Keyboard settings, under Dictation, the Shortcut menu shows what starts dictation. It might be the Microphone key, pressing a key twice, or a custom combination. Choose one you will remember. If you pick "Press Fn key twice", your Fn key setting changes to match.

On Macs with a Microphone key, pressing and releasing it starts dictation, but holding it down starts Siri.

4. Pick the right microphone

Under Dictation, the Microphone source menu shows which microphone your Mac is listening to. Automatic picks the one you are most likely to use, which is not always the one you meant, especially with AirPods, a webcam or a USB mic connected. Select yours by name.

5. Turn up the input volume

If dictation starts but nothing appears, your Mac may not be hearing you. Open System Settings, click Sound, then Input, select your microphone, and raise the input volume.

6. Do not cover the microphone

On a MacBook, clothing or your hand can block the built-in microphone. Sit as you normally would and speak clearly, not too quietly or too loudly. In a noisy or echoing room, a headset microphone helps.

7. Check the language and region

Dictation is not available in every language or region, and features vary. In Keyboard, Dictation, click Edit next to Languages and make sure the language you are speaking is selected. If you set up several, switch by clicking the language label next to the cursor or pressing the Globe key. Apple lists support on its feature availability page.

8. Check your internet connection

Depending on your language and Mac, dictation may need an internet connection. The note under Dictation in Keyboard settings tells you whether your voice is processed on your Mac or sent to Siri's servers. If it is sent to servers, check System Settings, Network.

9. Dictation stops after a while

That is by design. Mac dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech. There is no limit on how long you talk, so if you pause to think, start it again.

10. Wrong words, or words underlined in blue

When dictation is unsure, it underlines the word in blue. Click it to pick an alternative, or retype it. If the same name comes out wrong every time, there is no setting to fix it, because Mac dictation has no custom dictionary. Speak a little slower and closer to the mic, or use an app that lets you teach it words.

Still not working?

Apple keeps its own checklist at If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected. Turning Dictation off and on again in Keyboard settings, or restarting your Mac, is worth a try too.

When to stop fixing and switch

If dictation works but keeps getting your words wrong, cuts off when you pause, or you are not comfortable with your voice possibly going to Apple's servers, the problem is the tool rather than your settings.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee's Read Aloud player on Mac
Select text, press your reading key, listen.

SpeechBee is the dictation app we make. Hold a key, talk for as long as you like, and let go. The text appears at your cursor in any app with filler words removed. It always runs on your Mac and works offline after a one-time model download. You can teach it names it mishears and set up snippets, and it reads selected text aloud with a natural voice. We compare the two directly in SpeechBee vs Apple Dictation.

If you already use SpeechBee and it is not typing, check System Settings, Privacy & Security. SpeechBee needs Microphone to hear you, Accessibility to type the text, and Input Monitoring so its key works in every app.

Questions

Why is dictation not working on my MacBook?

The most common causes are Dictation being switched off in Keyboard settings, Voice Control being on, the wrong microphone selected, or pressing a different shortcut from the one set. Check those four first.

Why does my Mac dictation keep stopping?

Mac dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech. Start it again when you are ready.

Why does Mac dictation not type anything?

Your Mac may not be hearing you. Check the Microphone source under Dictation, then raise the input volume in Sound settings, Input. Make sure nothing is covering the built-in microphone, and click into the text field first.

Does Mac dictation need the internet?

Sometimes. It depends on your language and Mac. The note under Dictation in Keyboard settings says whether your dictation is processed on your Mac or sent to Siri's servers.

How do I reset dictation on a Mac?

Turn Dictation off in System Settings, Keyboard, then turn it back on and click Enable. If that does not help, restart your Mac.
