Guide

Typing less when your hands hurt

Three ways to use your voice on a Mac

They solve different problems. Dictation replaces typing. Voice Control replaces the mouse and keyboard together, so it is the one to look at if any hand use is difficult. A dictation app sits between them, aimed at people who still use a mouse or trackpad but want to type much less.

Apple Dictation

Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation. Then press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut in any text field and talk. You can choose a different shortcut in the same settings, including a custom key combination, so pick one that is comfortable to press. It stops after 30 seconds of silence. Our full guide is how to dictate on a Mac.

Voice Control

Voice Control lets you enter text and control your Mac by speaking commands instead of using a keyboard, mouse or trackpad. Apple notes that when Voice Control is on, standard Dictation is not available, because Voice Control handles dictation itself. If you need to use the Mac with as little hand movement as possible, start here. You will find it in System Settings, Accessibility.

A one-key dictation app

If you mainly want to stop typing long text, a dictation app can mean fewer keystrokes per sentence than built-in dictation:

  • One key, held or toggled. In SpeechBee you choose the key, such as Right Command or F5, and whether you hold it while talking or press it once to start and again to stop. Toggle mode means you are not holding a key down while you talk.
  • A dictionary. Teach it names and terms it gets wrong, so you correct them once instead of retyping every time.
  • Snippets. Say "my address" or "booking link" and get the whole text, with no typing.
  • Filler removal. "um" and "uh" come out before the text lands, so there is less to delete.

SpeechBee is not a replacement for Voice Control. It does not control your Mac by voice. It types what you say and reads text aloud.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

Read instead of scroll

Reading long text means scrolling, and scrolling means using your hands. Having text read aloud lets you take in an email or article with your hands at rest. On a Mac, turn on Speak selection in Accessibility, Read & Speak, select text and press Option-Esc. SpeechBee reads selected text with a natural local voice when you press its reading key. See text to speech on a Mac.

On iPhone and iPad

Turn on dictation in Settings, General, Keyboard, then tap the microphone on the keyboard. Apple says dictation works on the iPhone in many languages without an internet connection. SpeechBee also has a keyboard for iPhone and iPad, with the same dictionary and snippets as on your Mac when you turn on its optional iCloud sync. See how to dictate on iPhone.

A setup that types the least

  1. Turn on Apple Dictation, or install a dictation app, and choose a shortcut that is easy to press.
  2. Use toggle mode if holding a key is uncomfortable.
  3. Add the names and terms you use most to the dictionary.
  4. Create snippets for anything you type more than once a week.
  5. Turn on a reading voice so long text can be heard rather than scrolled.
  6. If you need to control the whole Mac by voice, set up Voice Control.

Questions

Can I use my Mac without typing?

Mostly, yes. Dictation replaces typing in text fields, and Voice Control lets you control your Mac by speaking commands instead of using a keyboard, mouse or trackpad. Both are built into macOS.

What is the difference between Dictation and Voice Control?

Dictation turns speech into text. Voice Control lets you operate your Mac by voice, and it handles dictation itself, so standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on.

Is dictation good for RSI or carpal tunnel?

We cannot give medical advice. Dictation reduces how much you type, and whether that is right for you is a question for a doctor or physiotherapist.

Does SpeechBee control my Mac by voice?

No. SpeechBee types what you say into any app and reads selected text aloud. For controlling the Mac by voice, use Apple's Voice Control.
