The best Aqua Voice alternatives

Aqua Voice is built for people who talk to AI tools all day. It is fast, reads your screen for context, and refines your words as you speak, all in the cloud. If you want your voice and screen to stay on your Mac, or a different price, here is what else to look at.

What Aqua Voice does well

Aqua turns speech into text in real time and refines it as you talk. It uses what is on your screen to get code syntax, library names and everyday terms right, and its site shows it dictating prompts into tools like Codex and Claude Code. Aqua quotes 230 words a minute. There is also an MCP server, a CLI, and its own transcription model, Avalon.

The free plan includes 1,000 words. Pro, with unlimited words, custom instructions and a bigger dictionary, is $8 a month billed yearly or $10 month to month. Max, at $24 or $30, adds a live Realtime mode and a "Send it" voice command. Students get 70% off. Aqua's site lists apps for macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.

The trade-off is privacy. Transcription runs on Aqua's servers, and its privacy policy says that with Privacy Mode off it may store transcript data to improve the product.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee's Read Aloud player on Mac
Select text, press your reading key, listen.

SpeechBee is ours, and it takes the opposite approach to Aqua. Nothing goes to a server. Speech recognition runs on your Mac, it never looks at your screen, and dictation works offline after a one-time model download. Hold your key in Cursor, a terminal or ChatGPT, talk, and the text appears at the cursor with filler words gone. Teach it the names of your libraries and functions in the dictionary, and set up snippets for things you type often.

It also reads text back. Select a model's long answer and press your reading key, and a natural local voice reads it while you look at something else.

It handles 25 languages by default, or up to 99 on Mac with Whisper, on Mac, iPhone and iPad under one plan. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.

2. superwhisper

superwhisper is popular with developers for the same reasons as Aqua, with more control. You build modes that pick a voice model and an AI model, and its Super Mode adapts to your screen. You can run local Whisper models offline or choose cloud models. One license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Free tier with unlimited local Whisper models, Pro from $8.49 a month or $249.99 for life.

3. Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow is the bigger cloud rival. It cleans up speech with no setup, has optional context awareness, runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and adds a meeting Notetaker. Free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop, Pro $15 a month or $144 a year. See our Wispr Flow review.

4. VoiceInk

VoiceInk runs local models on your Mac for a one-time $25, with custom words, replacements and voice editing of selected text. Its code is public. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later.

5. Spokenly

Free local Whisper and Parakeet models with no word cap and no account, free bring-your-own-key cloud models, and a local-only mode that blocks network requests. Pro is $99.99 a year. Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone.

6. Apple Dictation

Free and built in, with automatic punctuation in supported languages. It has no custom dictionary, which hurts for code and product names, and it may send audio to Apple's servers depending on your settings. See how to dictate on a Mac.

Try SpeechBee free for 7 days.

Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
