Wispr Flow review
Wispr Flow is the dictation app most people hear about first, and it has earned that. It is also cloud only and costs $144 a year. Here is what it does, what it costs, which discounts are real, and who should pick something else.

What Wispr Flow is
Wispr Flow is an AI dictation app. You hold a key, talk, and it types clean, punctuated text wherever your cursor is, in Gmail, Slack, Notion, a terminal, a code editor, or ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor. It is built to turn rambling speech into writing, so false starts and repeated words come out tidied. Wispr says it is 4x faster than typing, putting Flow at 220 words a minute against 45 on a keyboard.
It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. A newer Notetaker records meetings on Mac and Windows without a bot joining the call. The company announced an $81 million raise to build what it calls the Voice OS.
What we think it does well
- Polish with no setup. The point of Flow is that you do not configure it. The cleanup works out of the box.
- Every major platform. Few rivals cover Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android with one account.
- Context awareness. With it on, Flow reads a little text from the app you are in so names and jargon come out right.
- Teams and compliance. Shared dictionary and snippets, SSO and SCIM, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and HIPAA with a signed BAA are on the price list.
- A usable free plan to try it. 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, with no credit card.
Where it falls short
- It is cloud only. Your audio goes to Wispr's servers to be transcribed, then is deleted unless you turn on cloud storage. There is no offline mode.
- The price never stops. Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year. There is no lifetime option.
- The free plan is small for daily use. At Wispr's own 220 words a minute, 2,000 words is under ten minutes of talking a week.
- It writes but does not read. There is no text to speech.

Wispr Flow promo codes and discounts
We looked for working codes so you do not have to. These are the discounts Wispr itself publishes:
- Students: sign up with a .edu email and you get 3 months free, then $6 a month, which is 50% off. Without a .edu address, Wispr says to contact support to have the discount added. The free months are for new subscribers.
- Educators: 50% off Pro with an education email, according to the pricing FAQ.
- Nonprofits: discounted Pro on request.
- Yearly billing: 20% off, $12 a month instead of $15.
We did not find a public promo code beyond these. If a site offers you a code, check that the checkout link ends up on wisprflow.ai before you enter card details.
Privacy
Wispr is open about how dictation works. Audio is captured on your device when you press the shortcut, sent to its servers over TLS 1.2 or later, transcribed, and deleted as soon as it is transcribed unless you have turned on dictation cloud storage. Stored data is encrypted with AES-256. You can opt out of model training, choose how long local history is kept, and turn context awareness off. Wispr says it never sells your data.
That is a careful cloud design. It is still a cloud design. If you dictate client, patient or legal material and want the audio never to leave your Mac, a local app is the simpler answer.
Who should use Wispr Flow
- You move between a Mac and a Windows PC, or dictate on Android.
- You want the cleanup to just happen, without choosing models or modes.
- Your company needs SSO, shared vocabulary or a HIPAA agreement.
- You are a student and can get three months free.
Who should pick something else
- You want local processing. SpeechBee, VoiceInk and MacWhisper transcribe on your Mac.
- You want to pay once. VoiceInk is $25, SpeechBee Lifetime is $99, superwhisper is $249.99.
- You want it free and unlimited. Spokenly runs local models with no cap.
- You also want text read aloud. SpeechBee does both.

Questions
Is Wispr Flow worth it?
If you dictate daily across several platforms, want polished output with no setup, or need team controls, yes. If you work alone on a Mac and want your voice to stay there, a local app costs less and keeps your audio on the device.
Is Wispr Flow free?
There is a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile. Pro, with unlimited dictation, is $15 a month or $144 a year.
Is there a Wispr Flow promo code?
We did not find a public promo code. The real discounts are 3 months free and then 50% off for students with a .edu email, 50% off Pro for educators, a nonprofit discount, and 20% off for paying yearly.
Is Wispr Flow safe and private?
Wispr says audio is encrypted in transit, transcribed on its servers, and deleted after transcription unless you enable cloud storage, and that it never sells data. It holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification. Your voice does leave your device, which is the trade-off of any cloud dictation app.
Does Wispr Flow work offline?
No. It needs an internet connection because transcription happens on Wispr's servers.
What is the best alternative to Wispr Flow?
For local dictation on a Mac with Read Aloud, SpeechBee, which we make. For a one-time price, VoiceInk. For free, Spokenly. For more control, superwhisper. See the full list.
