Granola vs Wispr Flow

People compare these two because both turn speech into text with AI. But they do different jobs. Granola listens to your meetings and writes the notes. Wispr Flow types what you say into whatever app you're in. Most people need one of them, and some need both.

Different jobs, not rivals

Granola is a notepad for meetings. You start it when a call begins. It listens to your computer's audio, so no bot joins Zoom, Meet or Teams. You jot a few rough notes, and when the meeting ends Granola turns them and the transcript into clean notes with action items. On your phone it works for in-person meetings.

Wispr Flow is a keyboard you talk to. You hold a key, speak, and the text appears where your cursor is, tidied up as it types. It's for writing: emails, messages, documents, prompts for AI tools.

So the honest question isn't which is better. It's whether your pain is meetings or typing.

Where they overlap

Wispr Flow now has its own Notetaker for meetings on Mac and Windows. On the free plan you get limited access; Pro gives you longer history and the Growth team plan gives unlimited access. If you mainly dictate and only occasionally want meeting notes, that might be enough.

Granola doesn't type into other apps. It has no dictation mode for writing an email.

Price

For one person, they cost about the same: Granola Business is $14 a month, Wispr Flow Pro is $15 (or $12 a month on yearly billing).

The free plans are both real. Granola's free Basic plan writes AI notes but only shows 30 days of meeting history. Wispr Flow's free plan works in every app but has a weekly word limit; Pro removes it.

Privacy

Both send your audio to the cloud. Granola says it uses third-party transcription providers such as Deepgram and AssemblyAI, and AI providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic to write the notes. It doesn't keep the audio, only the transcript and your notes. It trains on anonymized data unless you opt out in Settings; on Enterprise, training is off by default.

Wispr Flow transcribes on its own servers and offers settings to keep your data out of model training. See our page on Wispr Flow privacy for the details.

Which one should you pick?

Choose Granola if:

  • You spend your day in meetings and hate taking notes.
  • You want follow-up emails and meeting briefs drafted for you.
  • You don't want a bot joining your calls.

Choose Wispr Flow if:

  • You write a lot and want to talk instead.
  • You need dictation on Windows or Android as well as Mac and iPhone.
  • You'd like occasional meeting notes in the same app.

A third option: SpeechBee

If what you actually want is the Wispr Flow side of this, talking instead of typing, SpeechBee does that without sending your voice anywhere. Speech is transcribed on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, so it works offline once the model has downloaded. Hold a key, talk, let go, and the text lands at your cursor with the "um"s removed.

It also reads. Select text on your Mac, press a key, and a natural local voice reads it back. That's handy for checking a long email before you send it.

Questions

Is Granola a dictation app?

No. Granola takes notes from meetings. It doesn't type into other apps. For dictation you'd want an app like Wispr Flow, or SpeechBee if you'd rather your voice stayed on your device.

Can Wispr Flow replace Granola?

Partly. Wispr Flow's Notetaker records meetings on Mac and Windows, with limited access on the free plan. Granola goes further on meetings, with briefs before calls, follow-up emails, templates and a phone app for in-person meetings.

Is Granola cheaper than Wispr Flow?

Slightly, for one person: $14 a month for Granola Business against $15 for Wispr Flow Pro. On yearly billing Wispr Flow Pro is $12 a month. If you want to own your dictation app outright, SpeechBee is $99 once.

Which is more private?

If privacy decides it, SpeechBee: it transcribes on your device, so your audio never leaves it. Between these two, both process speech in the cloud. Granola doesn't keep the audio, only transcripts and notes. Wispr Flow lets you keep your data out of model training.

Do I need both?

Some people use both: Granola for meetings and a dictation app for writing. If you only have one problem, pick the app that solves that one.
