What Voice Dream does

Voice Dream Reader turns PDFs, EPUBs, Word and PowerPoint files, web pages and more into audio. You can highlight passages, add notes and export your work, choose voices and tune speed and pronunciation. It works offline and continues across iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Accessibility is where it started: every screen is labelled for VoiceOver, text follows Dynamic Type, it works with Voice Control and refreshable braille displays. For readers who rely on those, few apps come close. Voice Dream also sells to schools.

Is it worth paying for?

If you want a reading library: books and documents imported once, with your place, notes and highlights kept across devices, Voice Dream is built for that, and its accessibility work is a real reason to choose it.

If you mostly want to hear text where it already is, an email, a web page, a draft in Pages, a library app is an extra step. That is where a different kind of tool fits.

A local Read Aloud option for Mac

SpeechBee is the app we make. Select text in any Mac app and press a key, and a natural voice that runs on your Mac reads it to you, with a small player to pause, skip and change the speed. Nothing is imported, uploaded or saved, and it works offline. On iPhone and iPad, paste text into the Read tab. SpeechBee also dictates: hold a key, talk, and your words appear at the cursor.

It costs $9 a month, $79 a year or $99 once, with the first 7 days free, and one plan covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. It does not keep a document library, export notes or support braille displays, and voice coverage depends on the language. If those matter, Voice Dream is the better fit.
