What MacWhisper is good at
Credit where due. MacWhisper transcribes audio and video files you drag in, records Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype, Chime and Discord calls without a bot, labels speakers, and exports subtitles, Word, PDF, Markdown and more. Transcription runs on your Mac with Whisper, Qwen and Parakeet models. It searches across all your transcripts and now has an iPhone and iPad app. There is a free version, and Pro is €64 once.
It also does system-wide dictation. That is where some people find it less suited, because the app is organised around a library of recordings rather than the cursor.

1. SpeechBee
Hi Maya, I'll send the revised proposal tomorrow morning.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee is ours, and it is the opposite shape to MacWhisper. There is no library and no file import. You hold a key, talk, and the words appear at your cursor in whatever app you are in, with filler words removed. Press another key with text selected, and a natural voice reads it aloud. Both run on your device, and dictation keeps working offline after a one-time model download.
It covers 25 languages by default, or up to 99 on Mac with the optional Whisper model, has a dictionary for names and snippets for things you type often, and runs on Mac, iPhone and iPad under one plan. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.
2. superwhisper
superwhisper covers the same three jobs as MacWhisper, dictation, meetings and files, with more control over how the text comes out. You build modes that pick a voice model and an AI model and set the tone per app. Local Whisper models work offline, and cloud models are optional. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android with one license. The free tier includes unlimited local Whisper models, and Pro is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime, with file transcription on Pro.
3. VoiceInk
VoiceInk is a focused dictation app that runs local models on your Mac. It has custom words, text replacements, filler removal and light modes, and its source code is public. It costs $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two, or $49 for three, with a 14-day refund. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and there is now an iPhone app.
4. Spokenly
Spokenly's local Whisper and Parakeet models are free with no word cap and no account, and you can add your own API keys for cloud models at no extra charge. A local-only mode blocks all network requests. Pro is $99.99 a year for managed cloud models, AI cleanup and sync, on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone.
5. OpenWhispr
OpenWhispr is the closest open-source match to MacWhisper's range. It does dictation, meeting notes without a bot, and audio uploads, on Mac, Windows, Linux and iOS. Local dictation is free and unlimited. The free plan includes 5 hours of meeting recordings a month, and Pro, at $80 a year, raises that to 20 hours and adds unlimited cloud transcription.
6. Wispr Flow
Wispr Flow is cloud dictation with an AI Notetaker for meetings on Mac and Windows. It needs a connection because transcription happens on Wispr's servers. The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop, and Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year. Our Wispr Flow pricing page has the details.
7. Apple Dictation
Free and built in. Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation, and press the Microphone key. It has no custom vocabulary or file transcription, and depending on your settings your voice may go to Apple's servers. See how to dictate on a Mac.
Keep MacWhisper if
You transcribe interviews, lectures, podcasts or calls, need subtitles or exports, or want everything searchable in one library. None of the dictation-first apps above replaces that.
Try SpeechBee free for 7 days.
Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
Questions
Is there a free MacWhisper alternative?
Spokenly and OpenWhispr both offer free, unlimited local dictation. OpenWhispr's free plan also includes 5 hours of meeting recordings a month. MacWhisper itself has a free version.

Does MacWhisper work on iPhone?
Yes. MacWhisper's Gumroad page says it is now available on iPhone and iPad.
Is MacWhisper a one-time purchase?
Yes. MacWhisper Pro is a one-time €64, and there is a free version. Bulk license packs are available.
