Online text to speech vs an app on your Mac

Paste text into a website, press play, and a voice reads it. It's quick and often free. It also means your text went to someone's server. For a recipe, that's fine. For a contract or a draft you haven't sent, it might not be. Here's the difference, and how to pick.

How online text to speech works

When you use a website or a cloud voice, your text travels to the provider's servers, a voice model turns it into audio there, and the audio streams back. The best AI voices often work this way. Many browser extensions offer cloud voices from providers such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon or OpenAI, and the Read Aloud extension, for example, says cloud voices may need a purchase or your own API key.

What happens to the text afterwards depends on the provider's privacy policy. NaturalReader, for instance, publishes a privacy, data processing and AI-use documentation set. Read the policy of any service you use for sensitive text.

How on-device text to speech works

The voice model runs on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere, it works without internet, and there are no character quotas. macOS Speak selection works this way. Some apps download neural voices and run them locally too.

Which to use when

  • Public web pages, articles, recipes: either works.
  • Your own drafts, emails, client documents, school work: on-device is the safer default.
  • Huge voice choice or audiobooks: cloud readers lead.

On-device options on a Mac

  • Speak selection, free and built in: System Settings, Accessibility, Read & Speak, then Option-Esc. See text to speech on a Mac.
  • SpeechBee, which we make: natural neural voices that download once and run on your Mac. Select text in any app and press your reading key; the text never leaves the Mac and reading works offline. It also does on-device dictation.

Questions

Is online text to speech safe?

For public text, generally yes. For private text, check the provider's privacy policy, because your text is sent to its servers.

Does Speak selection send my text to Apple?

Speak selection uses voices on your Mac to read text. It doesn't need an internet connection once a voice is downloaded.

Are on-device voices as good as cloud voices?

The biggest voice libraries are in the cloud. On-device neural voices have improved a lot; try both with your own text.
