Guide
Dictation with ADHD
If your thoughts move faster than your typing, or a blank document makes you drift, talking can be an easier way in. This guide is about setting up dictation so there is as little friction as possible between having a thought and seeing it written.

The idea: fewer steps between thought and text
It can go like this. The idea is there, then you open the app, find the right window, start typing, and it is gone. Dictation does not change how your mind works. It can remove some of the steps in between, which is the part software can actually help with.
1. Use one key that works everywhere
The fewer steps it takes to start, the more likely you are to use it. Pick a dictation setup that starts with a single key in any app, rather than one where you open a separate program first.
- On a Mac, Apple Dictation starts with the Microphone key or a shortcut you choose in Keyboard settings.
- Apps like SpeechBee let you hold one key, talk, and let go, with the text appearing wherever your cursor is.
- On iPhone, tap the microphone on the keyboard, or switch to a dictation keyboard.
2. Hold to talk, or press once and talk freely
Hold-to-talk gives you a clear start and stop. Press-once toggle mode is better when you want your hands free while you think out loud. Try both for a few days and keep the one you actually reach for. Apple's dictation stops after 30 seconds of silence, which can cut off a long pause. SpeechBee keeps listening until you let go or press the key again.
3. Talk first, tidy later
Do not try to say it perfectly. Get the thought out, rambling and all, and clean it up afterwards, or not at all if it is a note to yourself. Apps that remove filler words automatically take out the "um"s for you.
4. Capture everything in one place
Choose one notes app, or one document, as the place where spoken thoughts land. When dictation works in any text field, you can talk straight into your task list, your calendar or a reply without switching tools.
5. Let snippets do the boring typing
Your email address, your booking link, a standard reply you send every week. Saying a short cue like "my address" and getting the whole thing removes small tasks that are easy to put off. SpeechBee calls these snippets. On Mac, macOS also has text replacements in Keyboard settings, which expand typed shortcuts.
6. Listen back instead of rereading
If rereading your own writing is the part you skip, have it read to you. On a Mac, Speak selection in Accessibility settings reads selected text when you press Option-Esc. SpeechBee reads selected text with a natural voice when you press its reading key, so you can listen while looking away. See text to speech on a Mac.
7. Keep it private if it is personal
Thinking out loud often means saying things you would not type into a website. Cloud dictation apps send your audio to their servers. Local apps, including SpeechBee, transcribe on your device and never upload the audio.
Setting this up with SpeechBee
Hi Maya, I'll send the revised proposal tomorrow morning.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee is the app we make, and it is built around the steps above. One key to dictate into any app, one key to hear selected text, filler words removed, snippets for things you type often, and everything processed on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.
Try SpeechBee free for 7 days.
Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
Questions
Is dictation helpful for ADHD?
We cannot make health claims, and dictation is not a treatment. What dictation can do is reduce the number of steps between a thought and written text. Whether that helps you is something to try for yourself, and to discuss with a clinician if you are looking for ADHD support.
What is the quickest way to start dictating on a Mac?
Turn on Dictation in System Settings, Keyboard, and use the Microphone key or a shortcut. Or use an app that starts dictation with a single held key in any app. Our guide on how to dictate on a Mac walks through it.
Why does Mac dictation stop when I pause?
Apple's dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech. Start it again, or use an app that keeps listening until you stop it.
