How to choose a Mac dictation app

Three questions sort most people quickly.

Where should your voice go? Local apps transcribe on your Mac and work offline. Cloud apps send audio to a server, which can mean more polish and more platforms, and also means your words leave the machine. Some apps let you pick per mode.

Do you want your words kept or rewritten? Some apps transcribe and tidy, removing "um"s and adding punctuation. Others hand your speech to an AI that rewrites it into polished prose. Both are useful. They are not the same thing.

How do you want to pay? Subscriptions run from about $80 to $360 a year. A few apps sell a one-time license, and a few are free.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

Select text, press your reading key, listen.

Our app. Hold a key you choose, talk, and let go, and your words appear at the cursor in any app with filler words removed. Select text and press another key, and a natural voice reads it aloud. Speech recognition and the reading voices both run on your device, and dictation works offline after a one-time model download of about 600 MB. Audio is never uploaded or recorded.

It understands 25 languages by default, or up to 99 on Mac with the optional Whisper model, and has a dictionary for names plus spoken snippets. One plan covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.

2. Wispr Flow

One of the best-known names in AI dictation. It turns rambling speech into clean, punctuated writing, reads a little context from the app you are in to get names right, and runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. It also has a Notetaker for meetings on Mac and Windows. Transcription happens on Wispr's servers. The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, and students get 50% off. Read our Wispr Flow review for more.

3. superwhisper

The power user's tool. Build modes that pick a voice model and an AI model and set the tone for each app. Local Whisper models work offline, cloud models are optional, and it records meetings and transcribes files too. One license covers Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Free tier with unlimited local Whisper models, Pro from $8.49 a month, or $249.99 for life.

4. VoiceInk

A focused, open-source Mac dictation app with local models, custom words, text replacements and voice editing of selected text. $25 once for one Mac, $39 for two, $49 for three, with a 14-day refund. Needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later. There is an iPhone app too.

5. Spokenly

Free local Whisper and Parakeet models with no word cap and no account, plus free bring-your-own-key cloud models and a local-only mode that blocks network requests. Pro is $99.99 a year for managed cloud models, cleanup and sync. Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone.

6. MacWhisper

The best Mac app for transcribing recordings. Drag in files, record calls without a bot, label speakers and export subtitles or documents, all with local models. System-wide dictation is included. Free version, Pro €64 once, now also on iPhone and iPad.

7. Typeless

Cloud AI dictation that rewrites as you speak. It removes repetition, keeps only your final version when you correct yourself, sets a tone per app, translates as you speak, and edits selected text by voice. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. Free plan with a weekly word limit, Pro $12 a month billed yearly or $30 monthly. See Typeless vs SpeechBee.

8. Apple Dictation

Free and built in. Press the Microphone key in any text field and talk. It adds punctuation automatically in supported languages, and on Apple silicon you can type while it listens. It has no custom dictionary, keeps your filler words, stops after 30 seconds of silence, and depending on your settings may send audio to Apple's servers. Our guide to dictating on a Mac shows how to set it up.

How we picked

We looked at apps that type into any Mac app, as opposed to standalone transcription services, and read each vendor's pricing, product and privacy pages on 12 October 2026. We did not run an accuracy benchmark, so there is no "most accurate" winner here. Accuracy depends heavily on your microphone, accent and vocabulary, which is why every paid app above has a free plan, a trial or a refund window. Use it.

Questions

What is the best free dictation app for Mac?

For unlimited free dictation that stays on your Mac, Spokenly runs local models with no word cap. OpenWhispr's local dictation is also free. superwhisper's free tier includes unlimited local Whisper models. Apple Dictation is free and built in, with fewer features.

What is the best speech to text app for Mac?

It depends on what you value. SpeechBee is our pick for private, local dictation with Read Aloud. Wispr Flow is the most polished cloud option across platforms. superwhisper offers the most control, and MacWhisper is best for recordings.

Is there a Mac dictation app that works offline?

Yes. SpeechBee, VoiceInk, MacWhisper, Spokenly and superwhisper's local models all transcribe on your Mac without an internet connection.

Which Mac dictation apps have a one-time price?

VoiceInk is $25 for one Mac, MacWhisper Pro is €64, SpeechBee Lifetime is $99 for Mac, iPhone and iPad, and superwhisper's lifetime license is $249.99.

Is Apple's built-in dictation good enough?

For occasional use, yes. If you dictate a lot, the missing custom dictionary, the 30-second silence cutoff and the lack of filler removal start to cost time. We go into detail in SpeechBee vs Apple Dictation.
