superwhisper can do almost anything with your voice, if you set it up. Some people want less to configure, a cheaper one-time price, or a guarantee that nothing leaves the Mac. Here are eight apps that trade some of superwhisper's range for one of those.

Why people look for a superwhisper alternative

There is a lot to set up. superwhisper's strength is its modes. You pick a voice model and a language model for each, write instructions, and tie modes to apps. If you enjoy that, nothing else comes close. If you just want to talk and get text, it can feel like homework.

Local depends on the mode you picked. superwhisper runs offline Whisper models, and it also offers cloud models from several providers. When a mode uses a cloud model, your words go to that provider. That is your choice to make, but it means checking which mode is active before you dictate something private.

The lifetime license is $249.99. That is fair for what it does, and still ten times VoiceInk's price and more than double SpeechBee Lifetime.

Intel Macs are second-class. superwhisper says offline models only run really well on Apple silicon and recommends cloud models on Intel.

Hi Maya, I'll send the revised proposal tomorrow morning.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee is ours, and it is deliberately the opposite of superwhisper's approach. There are no modes to build. You pick one key for dictation and one for reading, and that is the setup.

Hold the dictation key, talk, and let go. The text appears at your cursor in any app, with "um" and "uh" taken out and "new paragraph" turned into a line break. Teach it names it gets wrong and save snippets for things you type often. Select text and press the reading key, and a natural voice reads it to you, which superwhisper does not do.

Everything runs on the device, every time, with no cloud model to switch to by accident. The speech model downloads once, about 600 MB, and after that dictation works offline. It handles 25 languages by default, or up to 99 with the optional Whisper model on Mac.

SpeechBee runs on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, plus iPhone and iPad, and one plan covers all three. The first 7 days are free. Then it is $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.

2. VoiceInk

VoiceInk is the cheapest way to own a local dictation app outright. $25 covers one Mac, $39 two, $49 three, with lifetime updates and a 14-day refund. Its source code is public.

It has modes too, but lighter ones, plus custom words, text replacements, and filler-word cleanup. Transcription runs on local models. There is now an iPhone app. The Mac version needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later.

3. Spokenly

Spokenly gives away what superwhisper's free tier also gives away, local models, but with fewer strings. Whisper and Parakeet run free, with no word limit and no account. Bring your own API key for cloud models and Spokenly adds nothing to the bill. A local-only mode blocks every network request.

Pro, at $99.99 a year, adds managed cloud models, AI cleanup and sync. Apps cover Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone.

4. Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow is the other end of the scale from superwhisper. Almost nothing to configure, polished cleanup of what you say, and apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. All of it runs in Wispr's cloud, so it needs a connection and your audio goes to its servers.

The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, with 50% off for students and educators. There is no lifetime option. We break the plans down in Wispr Flow pricing.

5. MacWhisper

If you use superwhisper mainly for its file transcription, MacWhisper is the specialist. Drag in recordings, record calls from Zoom, Teams or Webex without a bot, label speakers, and export subtitles. Dictation into other apps is included. Transcription uses local models, so files stay on the Mac.

There is a free version, and Pro is a one-time €64.

6. OpenWhispr

OpenWhispr is open source under the MIT license and covers Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. Local dictation is free and unlimited, and the free plan adds 2,000 cloud words a week and 5 hours of meeting recordings a month. Pro is $80 a year with unlimited cloud transcription, an agent mode and sync.

7. Aqua Voice

Aqua is cloud dictation tuned for speed, prompts and code. It reads your screen for names and syntax and refines text while you talk. The free plan has 1,000 words. Pro is $10 a month or $96 a year, and Max at $30 a month adds a live Realtime mode. Its privacy policy says transcripts may be stored to improve the product unless Privacy Mode is on.

8. Apple Dictation

Apple Dictation is free and already installed. Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation, and press the Microphone key in any text field. There is no custom vocabulary, no snippets, and no filler cleanup, and depending on your settings your voice may be processed on Apple's servers. Our guide on how to dictate on a Mac covers it step by step.

When superwhisper is still the best choice

Keep superwhisper if you use custom modes with different AI models for different apps, if you want local and cloud models in one place, if you need Windows and Android with one license, or if you transcribe meetings and video in the same app you dictate with. Nothing on this list matches all of that at once.

Try SpeechBee free for 7 days.

Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
