Dictate in Notion on a Mac

Notion has a microphone now, but it sends what you say to Notion AI. If you want your own words typed into a page, you use your Mac's dictation or a dictation app. Here's how to do both, and how to keep the page structured while you talk.

What Notion's own voice input does

In April 2026 Notion added voice input on desktop. You speak to Notion AI and it acts on the request: draft this, summarise that, find the doc about the offsite. Notion's AI Meeting Notes is a separate feature that records and transcribes meetings.

Neither one types your words into the block where your cursor is. If you want your own sentence in your own page, dictation is still the tool.

Dictate into a Notion page with Apple Dictation

  1. Turn on Dictation in System Settings, Keyboard.
  2. Open the page in the Notion app or in your browser and click into a text block.
  3. Press the Microphone key, or press Fn (Globe) twice.
  4. Talk. Say "new line" to start a new block and "comma" or "question mark" for punctuation.
  5. Press the key again to stop. Apple Dictation also stops after 30 seconds without speech.

Apple Dictation has no custom dictionary on Mac, so product names, project names and people's names often need fixing.

Keep the page structured

Notion's structure comes from blocks, and you can't really say "heading two". What works:

  • Type the marker, dictate the content. Type ## and a space for a heading, - and a space for a bullet, or [] for a to-do, then dictate.
  • Dictate the draft first, structure it after. Speak the whole thing in one block, then split it with Return and turn lines into headings with /.
  • Use a database for repeated notes. Meeting notes or daily logs with a template mean you only dictate the parts that change.

A one-key dictation app for Notion

If you write in Notion every day, a dictation app with a global key is quicker than starting and stopping Apple Dictation. In SpeechBee, which we make, you hold the right ⌘ key in any Notion block, talk, and let go. The text appears at the cursor. It transcribes on your Mac, removes filler words in 61 languages, fixes names from your dictionary and expands snippets, so "standup template" can become your whole meeting outline.

SpeechBee also reads text aloud. Select a paragraph in Notion and press the right ⌥ key to hear it, which is a quick way to catch a missing word before you share the page.

Questions

Does Notion have voice typing?

Notion has voice input on desktop, but it sends your speech to Notion AI as a request. To type your own words into a page, use your Mac's dictation or a dictation app.

How do I dictate in Notion on a Mac?

Click into a block, press the Microphone key or Fn twice to start Apple Dictation, and talk. A dictation app with a global shortcut works the same way in every block.

Can I make headings and lists by voice in Notion?

Not reliably. Type the Markdown shortcut (##, - or []) and then dictate the text.

Does dictating in Notion send my words to Notion AI?

Not if you use Apple Dictation or a dictation app; the text simply appears in the block. Whatever you put on a Notion page is stored by Notion, as usual.
