What Spokenly does well

Spokenly's local models are free forever with no word cap, no trial clock and no credit card. You can plug in your own OpenAI, Deepgram, Groq, ElevenLabs or Mistral keys and pay those providers directly, and a local-only mode blocks every network request. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. Pro, at $99.99 a year ($8.33 a month), adds managed cloud models such as GPT-4o Transcribe and Deepgram Nova 3, AI text cleanup, an Agent Mode and settings sync, with a 14-day refund. Teams get 30% off.

That is a lot of value for nothing. The catch is that you choose and manage the models yourself. Free AI cleanup runs through Apple Intelligence or your own LLM key, and managed cloud cleanup is on Pro.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee's Read Aloud player on Mac
Select text, press your reading key, listen.

SpeechBee is ours. It keeps Spokenly's best property, transcription on your device with nothing uploaded, and drops the model shopping. You pick a key and talk. Filler words are removed before the text lands, "new paragraph" and "period" format as you go, and a dictionary and snippets handle names and repeated text. It works offline after a one-time model download.

It also reads. Select text in any Mac app and press your reading key, and a natural local voice reads it back. One plan covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. 25 languages by default, up to 99 on Mac with Whisper. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.

2. VoiceInk

A focused local dictation app with custom words, replacements, filler removal and voice editing of selected text, for $25 once on one Mac, $39 on two or $49 on three. Its source code is public. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and there is an iPhone app.

3. superwhisper

If you like Spokenly's flexibility, superwhisper takes it further. Modes pick a voice model and an AI model per job or app, local Whisper models work offline, cloud models are optional, and it records meetings and transcribes files. Free tier with unlimited local Whisper models, Pro $8.49 a month or $249.99 for life.

4. OpenWhispr

OpenWhispr is the open-source match, MIT licensed, on Mac, Windows, Linux and iOS. Local dictation is free and unlimited, and the free plan adds 2,000 cloud words a week and 5 hours of meeting recordings a month. Pro is $80 a year for unlimited cloud transcription, Agent Mode and sync.

5. Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow is cloud dictation with polished cleanup and no setup, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. The free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop, and Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year. Your audio is transcribed on Wispr's servers. See our Wispr Flow review.

6. Apple Dictation

Free and built in, with automatic punctuation in supported languages. No custom dictionary or snippets, and depending on your settings it may process audio on Apple's servers. See how to dictate on a Mac.

Try SpeechBee free for 7 days.

Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
