A third option: SpeechBee
If you don't need a library of PDFs, and really just want to hear text you've written or selected, SpeechBee does that on a Mac. Select text in any app, press a key, and a natural voice reads it aloud. The voices run on your Mac, so your text isn't uploaded and there's no daily character limit.
It's a dictation app too: hold a key, talk, and your words appear at the cursor. Write by voice, then check by ear.
