The best VoiceInk alternatives

VoiceInk is hard to beat on price. $25 once buys local dictation on your Mac, and its source code is public. People look elsewhere when they need an Intel Mac, Windows, text read aloud, or one plan across their phone and computer.

What VoiceInk does well

VoiceInk transcribes on your Mac with local models, so it works offline and your audio stays put. It has custom words, replacements that expand short phrases, filler and repetition removal, structured notes and emails, and voice editing of selected text. Licenses are one-time: $25 for one Mac, $39 for two, $49 for three, with lifetime updates and a 14-day refund. The source code is public, and there is now an iPhone app.

The limits are clear too. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later, there is no Windows version, and it does not read text aloud.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee is ours. Like VoiceInk it transcribes on the device and works offline after a one-time model download, so the privacy story is the same. The differences are what sits around it.

SpeechBee reads text aloud. Select text in any Mac app, press your reading key, and a natural local voice reads it, with a player for speed and skipping. One plan covers your Mac, iPhone and iPad, where it is a keyboard plus an app. There are fewer settings, by design. You pick a key, choose hold or toggle, and talk.

It has a dictionary for names, spoken snippets and filler-word removal, and handles 25 languages by default or up to 99 on Mac with Whisper. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once.

2. Spokenly

Spokenly is free where VoiceInk is cheap. Local Whisper and Parakeet models cost nothing, with no word cap and no account, and you can add your own API keys for cloud models without paying Spokenly. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, and has a local-only mode that blocks network requests. Pro is $99.99 a year for managed cloud models, cleanup and sync.

3. superwhisper

superwhisper goes further than VoiceInk's modes. Each mode picks a voice model and an AI model and can target specific apps. It records meetings, transcribes files on Pro, and runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android with one license. The free tier includes unlimited local Whisper models. Pro is $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 for life. Offline models run best on Apple silicon, and superwhisper points Intel users to cloud models.

4. MacWhisper

MacWhisper is the file and meeting specialist. Drag in recordings, record calls without a bot, label speakers and export subtitles, all with local models. It includes system-wide dictation too. Free version, Pro €64 once, on Mac, iPhone and iPad.

5. Wispr Flow

If you want the opposite of VoiceInk, polished cloud dictation with no setup on every platform, Wispr Flow is it. Audio is transcribed on Wispr's servers. The free plan gives 2,000 words a week on desktop, Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, and there is no lifetime option. See our Wispr Flow review.

6. Apple Dictation

Free and built into macOS, and it works on Intel Macs. It has no custom dictionary or snippets and keeps filler words, and depending on your settings it may process audio on Apple's servers. See how to dictate on a Mac.

Voice to text and Read Aloud on your Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the week, $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once. Every plan has every feature.
