Speechify vs Voice Dream

Both read your PDFs, documents and web pages aloud. Speechify is the big, glossy one, with celebrity voices, AI summaries and apps everywhere. Voice Dream is the reader built for people who read differently, with voices that work offline. Here's how to choose.

Cheapest published way to keep each app: monthly, yearly or a one-time license. US dollars before tax, prices checked on 13 October 2026.

Price

Speechify Premium is $29 a month, or $139 a year. The free plan reads with 10 basic voices at up to 1.5x.

Voice Dream needs a subscription after its free trial. The App Store lists a $4.99 monthly plan and annual plans from $39.99 to $89.99, plus individual voices at $4.99 each. Even at the top annual price, it's cheaper than Speechify yearly.

Voices and offline listening

Speechify's voices are the draw: more than 1,000, in 60+ languages, and you can listen at up to 5x. They stream from the cloud.

Voice Dream's voices all work offline and keep playing in the background with the screen locked. That matters on a plane, on a train, or anywhere your signal drops.

Accessibility

This is where Voice Dream stands apart. It says every screen is labelled and tested with VoiceOver, it works with refreshable braille displays, and it supports Dynamic Type and Voice Control. It was built for blind and dyslexic readers first.

Speechify is built as a mainstream productivity app, with AI summaries, podcasts and voice typing on top of reading.

Which one should you pick?

Choose Speechify if:

  • You want the widest choice of natural voices.
  • You listen very fast.
  • You need it on Windows, Android or in the browser.

Choose Voice Dream if:

  • You use VoiceOver or a braille display.
  • You want to listen offline.
  • You'd rather pay less than $139 a year.

A third option: SpeechBee

Some people looking at readers really want something narrower: to hear their own writing, or a bit of text from a web page, before they send it. SpeechBee does that on a Mac. Select any text, press a key, and a natural voice reads it aloud. The voices run on your Mac, so the text never leaves it.

It's a dictation app too: hold a key, talk, and your words appear at the cursor. So you can write by voice and check by ear.

SpeechBee is not a library for PDFs and ebooks, doesn't scan pages, and doesn't replace VoiceOver. It costs $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once, with the first 7 days free.
