What Voice Dream does well

Voice Dream Reader imports PDFs, EPUBs, Word and PowerPoint files and web pages into a library, then reads them aloud with a voice, speed and pronunciation you choose. You can highlight passages, add notes and export your work, listen offline, and carry on across iPhone, iPad and Mac. It was built for people who read differently. Every screen is labelled for VoiceOver, text follows Dynamic Type, and it works with Voice Control and refreshable braille displays. It is a free download with in-app purchases.

If you need a full accessibility-first reading library, it is still one of the best. The alternatives below fit different jobs.

Most people read faster than they speak. SpeechBee reads the sentence you selected out loud, while you keep working.

SpeechBee's Read Aloud player on Mac
Select text, press your reading key, listen.

SpeechBee is ours, and it works differently from a library app. There is nothing to import. Select text in Mail, Safari, a PDF or a document on your Mac, press your reading key, and a natural voice reads it, with a small player to pause, skip, and set the speed from half to double. On iPhone and iPad, paste text into the Read tab.

The voices download once and run on your device, so reading works offline and your text never leaves it. Engines cover English and Mandarin, six European languages with richer voices, or 31 languages from one install. Each read is up to 5,000 characters, so it suits emails, articles and chapters rather than whole books in one go.

SpeechBee also does dictation. Hold a key, talk, and your words appear at the cursor. 7 days free, then $9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once, with one plan for Mac, iPhone and iPad.

2. ElevenReader

ElevenReader, from ElevenLabs, has some of the most natural voices around. Its free plan includes 10 hours of text to audio a month, more than 1,000 voices, speeds up to 4x and thousands of free audiobooks. Ultra, at $11 a month or about $99 a year, adds unlimited listening for your imports, 20 hours a month of premium audiobooks, offline downloads and custom voices. On a Mac you use it on the web or through the Chrome extension, and there are iPhone and Android apps.

3. Speechify

Speechify is the biggest name in text to speech. Premium includes more than 1,000 voices in 60+ languages, speeds up to 5x, scanning printed pages, AI summaries and chat, cloud drive integrations, AI podcasts and voice typing. It runs on Mac, the web, Chrome and Edge, iPhone and Android. The free plan is limited to 1.5x speed and 10 basic voices. Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year. We compare it with others in Speechify alternatives for Mac.

4. NaturalReader

NaturalReader has a free forever plan with no credit card. It reads documents and web pages in the browser and through a Chrome extension, offers a focus mode that highlights text as it reads, exports MP3 files, and scans printed text with your phone's camera. Its iPhone and Android apps have an offline mode. There are personal, education and commercial plans.

5. Speak selection on Mac

macOS reads selected text aloud for free. Turn on Speak selection in System Settings, Accessibility, Read & Speak, select text and press Option-Esc. You can highlight words and sentences as they are read and show a controller for speed and skipping. Our guide on how to make your Mac read text aloud walks through it, including downloading better voices.
