Apple Dictation vs Whisper apps

Every Mac has free dictation built in. A whole category of apps instead runs OpenAI's Whisper model, or similar local models, on your Mac. Here's what you actually gain by switching, and when Apple's version is all you need.

Where Apple Dictation is fine

It's free, already installed, works in any text field, and supports voice commands for punctuation. Apple says you can check in System Settings, Keyboard, under Dictation, whether your general dictation is processed on your device. For short messages, that's often all you need. Our guide: how to dictate on a Mac.

What a Whisper app adds

  • No 30-second cutoff. Talk as long as you hold the key.
  • A dictionary so names and jargon come out right after one correction.
  • Local processing every time, not depending on language or settings.
  • More languages. Whisper covers about 99.
  • Extras such as snippets, filler removal, AI rewriting modes, or file and meeting transcription, depending on the app.

Which Whisper app?

They differ by job. MacWhisper is best for recordings and meetings. superwhisper is for dictation with AI modes. VoiceInk is the cheapest to own. Spokenly and OpenWhispr are free. SpeechBee, which we make, is simple dictation plus Read Aloud on Mac, iPhone and iPad; it uses NVIDIA's Parakeet model by default for 25 languages and Whisper as an option on Mac for up to 99. Questions

Is Whisper more accurate than Apple Dictation?

We haven't run a benchmark, so we won't claim a number. Accuracy depends on your voice, language, microphone and vocabulary. A custom dictionary, which most Whisper apps have, fixes the names and terms that general dictation keeps missing.

Does Apple Dictation use Whisper?

No. Apple Dictation uses Apple's own speech recognition. Whisper is OpenAI's open model used by third-party apps.

Is Apple Dictation private?

It can be processed on your Mac, depending on language and settings, and Apple tells you where to check. Whisper apps that run locally always process on your Mac.

Can I use both?

Yes. They don't conflict, as long as you give them different shortcuts.
