What MacWhisper does

MacWhisper is, first of all, a transcription app. Drag in an audio or video file, or record from your microphone, and it turns speech into a searchable, editable transcript on your Mac. All transcription runs on the device, so nothing leaves your machine, which is why it is popular for interviews and other sensitive recordings.

Its feature list is long. It records meetings in Zoom, Teams, Webex and others, labels speakers, removes filler words like "um", batch-processes files, and exports subtitles (.srt, .vtt) as well as Word, PDF, Markdown and more. It also offers system-wide dictation with Whisper models to replace Apple's own, and it can use local or cloud AI models to summarise and chat with your transcripts.

Free or Pro?

MacWhisper's site does not publish a single table of which feature belongs to which edition, so check the current list on its site before you buy. In general, the free version lets you transcribe files with smaller local models, and Pro is the license that unlocks the larger, more accurate models and the professional features listed above.

If you transcribe a podcast now and then, try the free version first. If you transcribe recordings every week for work, Pro at €65 once is cheap next to a transcription subscription, and it is yours to keep.

MacWhisper for dictation

A dictation-first option
