SpeechBee vs Speechify
SpeechBee is local Apple dictation. Speechify is a listen-aloud product that also sells Voice Typing.
SpeechBee transcribes on Mac, iPhone, and iPad after the selected model downloads, then can read selected Mac text locally. Speechify’s published center of gravity is listening to text, with Premium voices, Scan & Listen, AI podcasts, a Voice AI assistant, and Voice Typing. Those are different jobs. SpeechBee does not replace VoiceOver or other accessibility screen readers.
Short answer
SpeechBee wins the private Apple writing job. Speechify wins the listen-to-documents job.
Choose SpeechBee if you write on Apple devices and want speech recognition and selected-text reading to stay on those devices after the selected models download.
Choose Speechify if you want a listen-later reader for web pages, PDFs, and scans, a large Premium voice catalog, Windows or Android coverage, or Speechify’s Voice AI assistant. Speechify also publishes Voice Typing as a Premium dictation feature; that is still a Speechify account product, not SpeechBee’s local model path.
At a glance
The decision-relevant differences.
| Question | SpeechBee | Speechify |
|---|---|---|
| Primary published job | Shortcut-to-cursor dictation, plus optional local Read Aloud on Mac | Listen to text; Premium also lists Voice Typing, AI podcasts, and a Voice AI assistant |
| Where does speech-to-text live? | On the deviceLocal model after download | Voice Typing is a Speechify Premium feature on an account that syncs User Content with Speechify servers |
| Where does reading live? | Optional local reading of selected Mac text after the voice model downloads | Cloud TTS product with 1,000+ Premium voices and 60+ languages on the pricing page |
| Internet | Not required for dictation after the selected speech model downloads | Speechify is an online service; Premium listening features and Voice Typing assume the Speechify product, not a local ASR download |
| Published platforms | Mac, iPhone, and iPad | Web, Chrome, Edge, iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows on Speechify’s site |
| Document listening | Not a PDF/Drive listen-later library | Premium lists Scan & Listen plus Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive integrations |
| Accessibility screen reader | No. SpeechBee does not replace VoiceOver | A listen-aloud app is not the same as a full screen reader |
| Individual entry point | $9 monthly, $79 yearly, or $99 one time; 7-day trial on Apple subscriptions | Free: 10 robotic voices, 1.5× speed, TTS only. Premium: $29/month; yearly billing is advertised as 60% off |
Workflow
Write by voice, or listen to text.
On Mac, SpeechBee records with a global shortcut, transcribes with the selected local model, and inserts finished text where the field accepts it. On iPhone and iPad, the SpeechBee voice keyboard does the same in the current field. Select text on Mac and let SpeechBee read it aloud with a local voice you installed. Starting dictation stops reading before the microphone opens.
Speechify’s pricing page leads with listening: Premium voices, faster playback, Scan & Listen, summaries, cloud-storage integrations, AI podcasts, a Voice AI assistant, and Voice Typing. Speechify’s own marketing line for Voice Typing is “Write 5× faster with dictation.” That is Speechify’s claim, not a SpeechBee benchmark, and it is not evidence that Voice Typing transcribes on-device the way SpeechBee does after a model download.
Privacy
A listen app and a local dictation app are not the same architecture.
Speechify’s privacy policy says submitted information is processed and stored in the United States, that saved User Content syncs with Speechify servers, and that analytics and advertising partners include Google Analytics, Amplitude, Segment, Meta Pixel, and others. SpeechBee ships without analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting. Dictation audio is not sent to a SpeechBee transcription service. Optional iCloud continuity is Apple’s sync for personal corrections and snippets, not a SpeechBee reading or transcription cloud.
Limits
What each product gives up.
SpeechBee
Focused Apple dictation with optional local Read Aloud on Mac. No Windows or Android app, no 1,000-voice catalog, no Scan & Listen library, and no Voice AI assistant. It does not replace VoiceOver.
Speechify
Listening, Voice Typing, and Voice AI sit on a Speechify account. The privacy policy describes server sync for saved User Content. The Free plan is TTS-only, with 10 robotic voices and 1.5× speed. Premium is published at $29 per month.
Common questions
Before you choose.
Is SpeechBee a Speechify alternative for listening to PDFs?
No. SpeechBee can read selected text on Mac after you install a local voice. It is not a listen-later library for PDFs, Drive files, or scanned pages. Speechify Premium publishes Scan & Listen and cloud-storage integrations for that job.
Does Speechify do dictation?
Yes. Speechify’s pricing page lists Voice Typing on Premium. That feature lives in Speechify’s product and account, not in SpeechBee’s local speech-model path.
Does SpeechBee need the internet for dictation?
The selected speech model needs a one-time download. After that, dictation transcription runs locally. Optional iCloud continuity uses Apple’s sync. Optional user-triggered Cloud BYOK text cleanup is a separate path and never receives audio.
What does Speechify cost?
The pricing page publishes a Free plan (10 robotic voices, 1.5×, TTS only) and Premium at $29 per month, with a yearly option advertised as 60% off. Confirm the current annual total on Speechify’s yearly toggle before you buy. Studio and API are separate Speechify products.
Can I start a SpeechBee trial now?
Yes. Start a 7-day trial from this site. Eligible Apple monthly and annual plans include the introductory trial; the $99 lifetime purchase charges immediately and includes a 30-day guarantee.
