Open System Settings, click Keyboard, and turn on Dictation. Then press the Microphone key or your dictation shortcut in any text field. ### What is the shortcut for dictation on a Mac? The Microphone key, or pressing Fn (Globe) twice, depending on your Mac and settings. You can choose another or set a custom one in Keyboard settings. Apple says you can check in Keyboard settings, under Dictation, whether your general dictation is processed on your Mac. It depends on your language. Local dictation apps always work offline after their model downloads. ### Is Mac dictation private? Apple says general dictation may be processed on your Mac without being sent to its servers, depending on language and settings. Separately, the Improve Siri & Dictation setting controls whether Apple may store audio. While you keep talking, it keeps going. Dictation apps usually listen as long as you hold their key. ### Why does Mac dictation keep stopping? Usually the 30-second silence limit. Apple Dictation on Mac has no custom dictionary. Voice Control supports a custom vocabulary, and most dictation apps, SpeechBee included, have a dictionary. ### How do I add punctuation when dictating? Say the mark: "comma", "period", "question mark", "new paragraph". Apple Dictation also adds punctuation automatically in supported languages. ### Can I dictate in any app on a Mac? Yes, anywhere you can type. Word and Outlook also have their own Dictate buttons with Microsoft 365, and Google Docs has voice typing. ### Can I dictate in two languages on a Mac? Add languages in Keyboard, Dictation, Languages, then switch while dictating by clicking the language next to the cursor or with the Globe key. The time you save depends on how much you edit afterwards. ### Can I control my Mac by voice? Yes, with Voice Control in Accessibility settings. Dictation only types; Voice Control also clicks, scrolls and opens apps. ### Is there a better dictation app than Apple's for Mac? It depends on what you need: a dictionary, no time limit, local processing, AI rewriting or file transcription.
