# Dictation for students

Talking is usually faster than typing, and for a lot of students it is easier to say what you mean than to write it. Dictation won't write your essay for you, but it can get the first draft out of your head. Here are the free options you already have and a workflow that works.

> ### The short version
>
> 1. Start with what you already have: Apple Dictation, Google Docs voice typing, or Word's Dictate.
> 2. Outline first, then talk through one point at a time.
> 3. Keep talking when you stumble. Fix it later.
> 4. Listen to the draft read aloud before you edit.
> 5. Check your school's rules on AI writing tools. Plain dictation keeps your own words.

## Free dictation you already have

| Tool | Where it works | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | Any text field on Mac, iPhone and iPad | Turn it on in Settings |
| Google Docs voice typing | Google Docs, in Chrome, Edge or Safari | A Google account and an internet connection |
| Word Dictate | Microsoft Word | A Microsoft 365 subscription and an internet connection |

On a Mac, turn on dictation in **System Settings**, **Keyboard**, **Dictation**, then press the Microphone key in any app. In Google Docs, choose **Tools**, **Voice typing** and click the microphone. In Word, choose **Home**, **Dictate**, or press Option-F1 on a Mac. Many schools give students Microsoft 365 or Google accounts, so check what yours provides.

## How to dictate an essay

**Outline first.** Write your thesis and three to five main points. Then dictate one point at a time. With an outline, each stretch of talking has a job, and the draft has a shape.

**Talk as if you were explaining it to a friend.** You don't have to sound like an essay yet. Say the idea plainly, give the example, and move on. Making it formal is a job for the edit.

**Don't stop to fix mistakes.** If a sentence comes out wrong, say it again and keep going. Stopping to fix things pulls you back into typing and you lose your train of thought.

**Say your punctuation.** "Period", "comma", "question mark" and "new paragraph" work in Apple Dictation, Google Docs and Word.

**Listen before you edit.** Have the draft read aloud. You will hear the repeated word, the missing step in your argument and the sentence that runs on, much faster than you would spot them by reading. On a Mac, turn on Speak selection in **System Settings**, **Accessibility**, **Read & Speak**, then select text and press Option-Esc.

## Notes and study

Dictation is good for getting your own thoughts down quickly: summarising a chapter in your own words, writing flashcards, or explaining a concept back to yourself, which is a solid way to check you understand it. It is not a lecture recorder. Apps like SpeechBee type what you say into the app you are using. They do not transcribe recordings of other people.

## Dictation and AI rules at school

Many schools now have rules about AI writing tools, so it helps to know which kind of tool you are using. Plain dictation turns your speech into text, word for word. Some newer dictation apps also rewrite what you say with AI to make it sound more polished, and that could count as AI help under your school's policy. If in doubt, ask your teacher, and choose a tool that keeps your words as you said them.

## A dictation app, if you need more

Built-in dictation is a good place to start. A dedicated app helps if you dictate a lot, want one key that works in every app, or keep having to fix the same names and terms.

SpeechBee is the one we make. Hold a key, talk, and your words appear in whatever app you're using, whether that's Google Docs in Safari, Word, Pages or your notes app. It removes "um" and "uh", keeps your wording, and learns names and subject terms once you add them to its dictionary. Its optional AI cleanup is off unless you turn it on, so by default what lands is what you said. It can read your draft back to you in a natural voice. Everything runs on your device, so your essays and voice never leave it, and it works offline. On iPhone and iPad it is a keyboard you switch to.

There is no student discount. SpeechBee is $79 a year or $99 once after a 7-day free trial, with one plan for Mac, iPhone and iPad. For younger students, a parent or guardian handles the purchase on the family's Apple account.

## Questions

### Is it cheating to dictate an essay?

Dictation types the words you say, so the writing is still yours. Some apps rewrite your speech with AI, which your school may treat differently. Check your school's policy if you are unsure.

### What is the best free dictation for students on a Mac?

Apple Dictation is built in and works in any app. Google Docs voice typing is free in Chrome, Edge or Safari. If your school provides Microsoft 365, Word's Dictate is included.

### Can dictation transcribe my lectures?

Not the kind covered here. Dictation turns your own speech into text as you talk. To transcribe a recorded lecture, you need a transcription app that works with audio files, and you should ask permission before recording.

### How do I proofread a dictated essay?

Listen to it. Select the text and have it read aloud, with Speak selection on a Mac or a reading app. Mistakes are easier to hear than to see.

### Does dictation work on iPhone for school work?

Yes. Tap the microphone on the keyboard to dictate into any app. See [how to dictate on iPhone](https://speechbee.app/guides/how-to-dictate-on-iphone).
