# Dictation for developers

Speaking code symbol by symbol is slow. But a lot of a developer's day isn't code. It's prompts to AI assistants, pull request descriptions, review comments, docs and messages, and those are prose. That is where dictation earns its place.

By the SpeechBee team, who make SpeechBee. Updated 12 October 2026.

> ### The short version
>
> - **Dictate the prose:** AI prompts, PR descriptions, review comments, commit messages, docs, tickets and chat.
> - **Type the code**, or use a voice-coding tool such as Talon if you need to code hands-free.
> - **Teach your dictation app your stack's names** so "Postgres" and "kubectl" come out right.
> - **Use one key that works everywhere**, including the terminal and your editor.

## Where dictation helps a developer

**Prompts for AI coding assistants.** A good prompt gives context: what the code should do, what you tried, what to avoid. People cut that short when they type and say it in full when they talk. Dictating into the chat box of your AI assistant, or into an AI tool in your terminal, makes longer, clearer prompts cheap.

**Pull requests and reviews.** Explaining why a change exists is easier out loud. Dictate the description and the review comments, then tidy them up.

**Docs, tickets and messages.** READMEs, design notes, bug reports and chat replies are all prose. Talk them, then edit.

**Commit messages.** Short, but you write a lot of them. Saying "fix race in the session refresh when the token expires mid-request" is quicker than typing it.

## Where it doesn't help

Dictating code character by character, with brackets, operators and exact casing, is slow with a general dictation app. If you need to code without a keyboard, use a tool built for it.

**Talon** is hands-free input for macOS, Windows and Linux. It handles commands and dictation, lets you write your own voice commands in small script files, and can move the mouse by eye tracking with supported hardware. It takes real time to learn, and people who code by voice every day rely on it.

**Voice Control**, built into macOS, lets you click, scroll, open apps and edit text by voice, with a custom vocabulary and your own commands.

## Set up dictation for technical words

General speech recognition is trained on everyday language, so technical names are where it slips. Fix that once:

1. **Add your stack to the dictionary.** Framework names, CLI tools, service names, teammates' names and product names.
2. **Make snippets for things you repeat.** A spoken cue like "repro steps" can expand to your bug-report template. "My calendar link" can expand to the URL.
3. **Say formatting.** "New paragraph", "comma" and "period" keep prompts and PR descriptions readable.

Apple Dictation on Mac has no custom dictionary, so its mistakes come back every time. Dedicated apps, SpeechBee among them, remember your corrections.

## Dictating into the terminal and your editor

Apple Dictation can start in any text field. A dictation app with a global shortcut, such as SpeechBee, types at the cursor in any app where you can type, including terminal apps, code editors and browser-based tools. That matters for AI tools in the terminal, where you would otherwise type a long prompt by hand.

## Keep your voice off other people's servers

Some dictation apps send your audio to the cloud. If you talk about unreleased code, customer data or internal systems, that is one more place your words go. SpeechBee transcribes on your Mac: your audio is never uploaded or recorded, and it works offline. The text you dictate into an AI assistant is still sent to that assistant, of course, so its rules apply to what you say there.

## SpeechBee, for the prose part

SpeechBee is the app we make. You choose a key, such as Right Command or F5, and either hold it while you talk or tap it to start and stop. Your words appear at the cursor with "um" and "uh" removed, technical terms spelled the way your dictionary says, and snippets expanded. It can also read selected text aloud, which is handy for listening to a long spec or a PR thread. It needs an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later.

## Questions

### Can you code by voice on a Mac?

Yes. Talon is the tool most people who code by voice use. It runs on macOS and lets you define your own voice commands. Voice Control, built into macOS, handles general commands and dictation.

### Is dictation useful for programmers who don't code by voice?

Yes, for the prose: prompts to AI assistants, pull request descriptions, review comments, docs, tickets and chat. Those are often a large part of the day.

### Can I dictate into the terminal?

With a dictation app that types at the cursor, yes. SpeechBee works in any app where you can type, terminal apps included.

### How do I get dictation to spell technical terms correctly?

Add them to your dictation app's dictionary once. Apple Dictation on Mac has no custom dictionary. SpeechBee and other dedicated apps do.

### Does SpeechBee send my audio to the cloud?

No. It transcribes on your Mac after a one-time model download, never uploads your audio and works offline.
