# Wispr Flow vs Apple Dictation

Apple Dictation is already on your Mac and iPhone, and it costs nothing. Wispr Flow costs $15 a month. So the real question is what the money buys you, and whether you'll notice the difference. Here's an honest answer.

By the SpeechBee team, who make a different dictation app. Checked on 21 October 2026.

> ### The short answer
>
> - **Stick with Apple Dictation** if you dictate a sentence or two now and then. It's free, built in, and fine for short messages.
> - **Pick Wispr Flow** if you dictate long emails and documents, want your rambling tidied up as it types, and use Windows or Android too.
> - **Pick SpeechBee** if you want more than Apple's dictation but would rather your voice stayed on your device, with a one-time price.
>
> **Full disclosure:** we make SpeechBee, a paid dictation app, so we have a stake in this. The Apple facts come from Apple's own Mac User Guide and the Wispr facts from Wispr's pricing page, both linked at the bottom.

## What Apple Dictation does well

**It's free and already there.** Press the microphone key on your Mac, or tap the microphone on your iPhone keyboard, and start talking. For a quick text or a search, there's nothing to install and nothing to pay.

In many languages it runs on your device, and it adds punctuation automatically where supported.

## Where people outgrow it

The complaints are consistent. On a Mac, **dictation stops after 30 seconds of silence**, which is annoying when you pause to think. It **types exactly what you said**, "um"s included. It **can't learn** your colleagues' names or the product words you use every day. And depending on your language and settings, your speech may still go to Apple's servers.

## What Wispr Flow adds

Wispr Flow is built for people who dictate a lot. You hold a key, talk as long as you like, and it **cleans up as it types**: filler words go, false starts get fixed, and the tone adapts to the app you're in. It learns your names and jargon, has snippets for things you type often, and works on **Windows and Android** too.

The trade-off: **every word goes to Wispr's servers**, and Pro is $15 a month, or $144 a year. Over three years, that's $432.

## Which one should you pick?

Stay with **Apple Dictation** if:

- You only dictate short messages.
- You don't want another subscription.
- You mostly use an iPhone and the keyboard microphone is enough.

Choose **Wispr Flow** if:

- You dictate long emails, documents or AI prompts every day.
- You want your speech tidied up automatically.
- You need the same app on Windows or Android.

## A third option: SpeechBee

SpeechBee sits between the two. Like Wispr Flow, it's built for real dictation: **hold a key and talk as long as you want**, filler words disappear, and you can teach it names and add snippets that work in every app. Like Apple's on-device mode, **your voice never leaves your Mac, iPhone or iPad**, and it works offline once the model has downloaded.

It also reads. Select text on your Mac, press a key, and a natural local voice reads it back, so you can hear what you dictated before you send it.

SpeechBee runs on Apple silicon Macs, iPhone and iPad, not Windows or Android. It costs **$9 a month, $79 a year, or $99 once**, with the first 7 days free.

## Questions

### Is Wispr Flow better than Apple Dictation?

For long dictation, yes: it doesn't stop after a pause, cleans up your speech and learns your vocabulary. For a quick text, Apple Dictation is free and good enough. If you want long dictation that stays on your device, try SpeechBee.

### Is Wispr Flow worth paying for?

If you dictate a lot every day, many people find it is. If you don't want a subscription or don't want your voice in the cloud, SpeechBee is $99 once and transcribes on your device.

### Does Apple Dictation send my voice to Apple?

It depends. Apple says dictation can run on your device in many languages, but in some cases your speech is sent to Apple's servers. Wispr Flow always sends speech to its servers. SpeechBee always transcribes on your device.

### Why does Apple Dictation keep stopping?

On a Mac, it stops after 30 seconds without speech. Wispr Flow and SpeechBee keep recording for as long as you hold the key. See [Mac dictation not working](https://speechbee.app/guides/mac-dictation-not-working) for other fixes.
