It is enough to find out whether listening suits you. The limits are real, though. Speechify describes the free voices as robotic, speed tops out at 1.5x, and you get text to speech only. The natural voices, which are the reason most people choose Speechify, are Premium. ## Is Premium worth $139 a year? It is if you listen for hours a week to books, PDFs and articles, scan printed pages, or rely on the reading features for study or work. Premium bundles a lot: voices, scanning, cloud-drive imports, AI summaries, AI podcasts, a voice assistant and voice typing. It is harder to justify if you only want to hear your own emails and drafts now and then. In that case you would be paying mostly for features you will not open, and there are cheaper ways to do it, including one already on your Mac. **One year, in US dollars** - Speechify Premium, monthly: $348 - Speechify Premium, yearly: $139 - SpeechBee Yearly: $79 ## How the free trial bills Speechify's Premium trial lasts 3 days. According to Speechify's help center, you need to cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged for the yearly subscription. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you cancel there, not on Speechify's website. Set a reminder when you start. ## Student discounts and promo codes We did not find a public student discount code or percentage on Speechify's site on 12 October 2026. Speechify mentions school discounts and sells education plans to schools and districts, so if you are a student, ask whether your school already provides it. Be careful with "Speechify promo code" sites: we found none that Speechify itself publishes. ## Cheaper ways to hear text on a Mac - **Speak selection, free.** Built into macOS. Turn it on in System Settings, Accessibility, Read & Speak, then select text and press Option-Esc. The voices are clear but flatter than Speechify's natural ones. Our [Mac text-to-speech guide](https://speechbee.app/guides/text-to-speech-on-mac) walks through it. - **SpeechBee, $79 a year or $99 once.** We make it. Select text in any Mac app and press a key to hear it in a natural local voice. It also does dictation: hold a key, talk, and your words appear at the cursor. It runs on your device, and one plan covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. It does not import whole PDFs or scan pages. - **Other readers.** ElevenReader and NaturalReader both have free plans.
